Other sites of interest to Rimfire owners and guests:

Beartown State Park:  Beartown State Park is a natural area of 107 acres located on the eastern summit of Droop Mountain, seven miles southwest of Hillsboro.  Development of the park has been minimal in order to preserve the natural attractions of the area. However, basic facilities are provided, and a boardwalk permits easy access. Interpretive signs along the boardwalk guide visitors and provide insights concerning the ecology of the area. The park is open daily from April to October, and may be seen during the closed season by contacting the Superintendent of nearby Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park. No fee is charged.

Cass Scenic Railroad:  Nestled in the mountains of West Virginia, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park offers excursions that transport you back in time and let you relive an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. Trips to Cass are filled with rich histories of the past, unparalleled views of a vast wilderness area, and close-up encounters with the sights and sounds of original steam-driven locomotives.  The Railroad operates from late May through late October.

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park:  Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is located in the Greenbrier River Valley north of Lewisburg and is the site of West Virginia's last significant Civil War battle. On November 6, 1863, the federal army of Brigadier General William W. Averell, in his second attempt to disrupt the Virginia-Tennessee Railroad at Salem, Virginia, faced again the Confederate troops of Brigadier General John Echols.

Highland Scenic Highway:  The Highland Scenic Highway, a National Forest Scenic Byway, is the highest major roadway in West Virginia and extends 43 miles from U.S. Route 219, seven miles north of Marlinton, to Richwood.  The Highway passes the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center, Falls of Hills Creek, the Cranberry Glades,  and the Cranberry Wilderness.

Monongahela National Forest:   Within the border of Pocahontas County is more than one-third of the 900,000-acre Monongahela National Forest, a vast paradise of forest land and natural wilderness areas. It is home to literally hundreds of miles of trails and back roads for people to explore and enjoy.

National Radio Astronomical Observatory at Green Bank:  Operates the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT), the world's largest fully steerable single aperture antenna.  In addition to the GBT, several other telescopes exist at the Green Bank site.  Tours are available daily in the summer and Wednesday-Sunday in other seasons.  See the site for details.

Pearl S. Buck Birthplace:  Located about 10 miles south of Marlinton, in the beautiful and historic "Little Levels" of Pocahontas County, at Hillsboro, West Virginia, is the restored Birthplace of Pearl S. Buck, the most distinguished descendant of two outstanding families--the Stulting and Sydenstricker families.  Ms. Buck wrote The Good Earth, for which she won the Pulitzer Price for Literature in 1932.  She was also awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature  in 1938.  She was the first American woman to ever receive both of these awards.  Tours are available May 1 through November 1.

Pocahontas County Chamber of Commerce:  The Pocahontas County Chamber of Commerce's mission is to promote a progressive, sustainable business community in Pocahontas County.

Pocahontas County Convention & Visitors Bureau:  Your one-stop guide to one of the largest playgrounds in the world, 900 square miles of mountains and forests offering an outdoor recreation paradise and a kaleidoscope of natural wonders.

The Snowshoe Foundation:  The Mission of the Snowshoe Foundation is to seek to enhance the quality of life in our local communities through assisting local organizations and / or individuals in areas of health, human services, education, recreation, the arts, culture and the environment, with an emphasis on children, youth and family programs.

Watoga State Park:  Watoga State Park is located in the mountains of Pocahontas County just 14 miles south of Marlinton, West Virginia. The park consists of 10,100 acres filled with a multitude of recreational activities including hiking, swimming, fishing and boating.  Camping and cabins are available year-round.
